ramp vignette with questions

Postby AnnissaN » Wed Jul 23, 2014 5:27 pm

Hi All!
Heading to my 6th test in a week and have some questions...

in drawing the railings, they don't really meet perpendicularly neat, they kind of overlap eachother, is that okay??

Also, why is there not a door from the other exit corridor?

does it matter if the door swings out north or out south?

Any comments are much appreciated!! thank you!!!

also, Jennys Notes says that no ramp should be shorter than 48" but the NCARB passing solution shows a 36" ramp...any clarification on that???
thank you all!

Yes. Butt, overlap, partially or fully. It's unimportant. But don't cross into egress path.

Because there isn't.

Huh?

Egress narrows at base of stair.
Hold rails 2" off walls and edges.
Stop landing rails at extension when at wall or adjacent to higher surface.

So do you need the 60" circle at base of stairs? Is that what the consensus is? I'm now confused regarding the narrowed egress at base of stairs...

Right, there needs to be 5' space at bottom of stairs, as well as ramp. As far as door swing, it doesn't matter what cardinal direction it swings (right hand or left hand), it just needs to swing in the direction of egress. Your door swing is fine.

No.

Once you establish a width, you must maintain it all the way to the exit. If the ramp is 60" overall, then the path from the ramp to the exit must be 60" min. Same for the stair. If the stair is the 44" min, then a path from the stair to the exit may be 44" min.

I'm still confused as to why this solution narrows at the base of the stair. Coach adds this comment to a lot of posted solutions. Does item number 5 in the handrail section of the code not account for this?
Thank you!

Look at the solution posted above. What's the overall stair width?
It's 60".

Once you establish that width, you must maintain it all the way to the exit.

I don't know how to make it simpler.

I understand what your saying. It's hard to tell without dimensions but it looks like there is 60" at the base but that just the handrails protrude into the space. I'm saying item number 5 in the code says this is allowed, which means it doesn't technically narrow... or am I missing the point. I'm happy to do it this way just curious.

Allowable rail projection only applies to rails parallel to path of travel.
